3nm Drives PCIe Gen7 by Annie Liao
PCIe is the primary interface for exchanging data between CPUs, GPUs, and drives inside servers and PCs. And it’s on the verge of the biggest overhaul the technology has seen in years.
With PCIe Gen 6 and 7, PCIe will switch to a PAM4 modulation scheme that will allow data rates to rise to 64GB/second and 128GB/second while traveling longer distances. The upshot: Designers will be able to build larger, more powerful AI servers.
Annie Liao, product marketing manager at Marvell Technology, explains the shift and shows off two early examples of the new generation of PCIe devices.
